Why CSS-Tricks Has Been Quiet Lately

Because I haven’t published anything to it since August 31. And no one else has either. That’s not a super long time to go silent but it is for a site that regularly publishes anywhere from 2-5 articles a week, and some of you have hit me up saying you’ve noticed.

I’ve paused my work, so it’s likely things will continue to be quiet over there, at least for a little while. It’s been a solo operation for years and I don’t believe DigitalOcean has anyone tagged to pick it up.

I’ve paused my work, not because I want to, but for noisy noise behind the scenes you probably don’t want to hear. Hopefully it gets worked out soon. I’m not angry, mad, or whatever, but I literally can’t afford to work free for months on end, and have to look at other options at some point, right?

Anyway, just thought I’d let you know. It’d suck for things to go dark without at least a little heads up. I wish I had something of a timeline for when, or whether, I’ll be able to pick things back up, but this is all I’ve got.

@geoff Sorry this hasn’t turned out to be the stable work we all hoped you were getting when you were brought back on.

I’m really hopeful! It’s just tough when you’re talking to a wall.

@AmeliaBR Honestly, it’s been a steady deal and all. But the sudden ghosting bothers me and is tough for me to understand/process.

@geoff This sucks, plain and simple. You’ve been doing such a great job at the helm. Thanks for the update, and I hope you get some proper updates rather sooner than later, Geoff!

A comment like this is honestly the nicest support. That and tagging DO where they pay attention.

I must be missing something. Their “write for css-tricks” page says:
“It’s a win for you, the writer.
We have a budget to pay you for your work. And the exposure you get ain’t bad.”
So why are you working for free?

I had been paid up until my last few invoices. It really is a good gig and something I love doing… and have loved doing for 12-ish years.

  15. # September 14, 2026

@geoff Understandably so. Having a contract cancelled sucks, but you can move on. Having invoices left unpaid and emails left unanswered is an awkward limbo. I hope someone on their end figures out where you are falling through the cracks.

I mean it with “cares” too, because as @vale.rocks rightly highlighted, it took mere hours for @digitalocean.com to pony up $3 mil to turbo-racist, DHH’s dotfiles project…

    @geoff sorry to hear this.

I used to believe that @digitalocean was a useful service and were interested in providing good content for developers but I can see that their focus has changed to chasing the AI and the fascist dollar.

Any chance CSS-Tricks could be listed on Open Collective / GitHub sponsors or any other crowdfunding platform?

It is quite literally the most important open source CSS project on the internet. I’m sure lots of people and companies would contribute, and it’d distribute the dependency from DO.

It’s always an idea! I mean, DO owns the “brand” so to speak. At the same time, I’m still optimistic something will work out. I consider my work “paused” rather than “over.”

ooof, this sucks. You’ve been doing such an amazing job, despite the choppy waters during the acquisition. It’s a shocker that DO isn’t supporting you considering that they own the brand and would ideally like some return on it. Regardless, thanks for keeping this going as long as you have!

You can hold you head high Geoff! You’ve been carrying the site for a while now since the acquisition and its pretty sad that DO isn’t holding up their end of the bargain. Best of luck!

The way you’re handling this publicly is admirable.

Like everyone, I hope you get everything you’re owed and more.

I want to do more than hope, I’m just not sure what that looks like. Is anyone already organizing?
