I worked on a new album this past year as a follow-up to last year’s Covers. I finished it early September, submitted it for distribution, and then… nothing. It sat quietly in “approval” hell.
But Gone Dark came out Monday which just so happened to be a very big day for a very different reason. I felt weird saying anything because it had that suspect look of capitalizing on the bigger buzz.
I really want to share it though because, if I’m honest, I’m a little proud of it. I was proud of Covers, too, but in a “hey-I-did-something-I’ve-always-wanted-to” way. I love that it’s raw and a clear demonstration of what I was learning about basic recording for the very first time. It’s even easy to hear how nervous I am playing and singing.
Gone Dark is sorta like a Take 2. It’s another set of covers, except for one original (the title track), giving me a chance to hone my craft further than I could last time around. I worked on better recording techniques, mixing and mastering, and maybe most needed, my own performance.
